Impact Test For LightCarbon Rims

Carbon wheel impact testing is conducted to evaluate the ability of carbon wheels to withstand impacts and ensure that they are safe and durable for use in cycling.

One common type of impact test for carbon wheels is the drop test. This involves dropping a weight onto the wheel from a specified height to simulate a real-world impact. The height and weight of the drop can vary depending on the specific standards being used.

The results of carbon wheel impact testing can help manufacturers identify potential weaknesses in their designs and make necessary improvements to enhance their strength and durability. It can also help ensure that carbon wheels meet industry standards for safety and durability.

Overall, carbon wheel impact testing is an important part of evaluating the safety and performance of carbon wheels and ensuring that they are safe and durable for use in cycling.

Below are two example cases of a impact test on LightCarbon road carbon rim RD28-44C and MTB carbon rim UAD935GP-XC:

Test Date: 2022/9/5 Weight: 430g
Striker Weight: 10kg Quantity: 1PCS
Striker Height: 400mm Hole: 24H
Test Condition: 1.Vertical drop (neutralization of the rebound of the anvil).
2.Tested wheel without tire.
3.Energy level: 40 Joules.
4.Impact striker geometry: Flat steel anvil.
5.Impact mass: Range of 6 -10kg. Energy must always remain at 40 Joules hit with a +/- 5% tolerance.
6.Hitting point:One hit at 90°from valve hole, adjusted to have the point between the spokes.
Test Standard: There should be no crack after 40J impact testing.
Test Result: original radial profile after impact deformed
0.13mm 0.15mm 0.02mm
0.15mm 0.19mm 0.04mm
After 40J impacting,radial deformation≤1mm,lateral deformation≤1mm

MTB Carbon Rim Impact Test Report

Rim Model: UAD935GP-XC Test Item: Impact Test
Test Date: 2022/9/5 Weight: 320g
Striker Weight: 22.5KG Quantity: 1PCS
Stack number: D1L21 Hole: 28H
Test Condition: 1.Striker weight: 22.5kg;
2.Striker shape: cylindrical, flat bottom;
3.No tire test;
4.After the wheel set is fixed, raise the striker to 48J(height 217mm), release the striker, and make it fall freely to the outer circle of the wheel rim, and observe whether the wheel rim cracks or breaks. If there is no crack or fracture, increase the height successively and continue to test until the crack or fracture appears.
Test Standard: There should be no crack after 60J impact testing.
Test Result: NO. Joule (height) After Impact Comment
1 48J(217mm) Normal OK
2 60J(272mm) Normal OK
3 70J(317mm) Normal OK
4 80J(363mm) Breakage NG
